今回は、洋楽和訳シリーズ第５弾！
ボブ・シーガーの「Turn the Page」を和訳します。
ボブ・シーガー（Bob Seger）は、アメリカ出身のロックミュージシャン、シンガーソングライター。
「Turn the Page」はもともと1971年に録音され、1973年に彼のアルバム「バックイン・72」でリリースされました。
ロックミュージシャンのツアー人生を情緒的に描いた作品で、彼自身の仕事と人生を歌ったもだと勝手に思っています。これも30年以上聴いている大好きな曲です。

エンジンの唸り声が奏でる単調な歌を聴いていると

道沿いのレストランに入り、体を温めていると視線を感じる
You pretend it doesn't bother you

平静を装ってるが本当は爆発しそうだ

「アイツらあれでも男かよ」

ツアー中まだお金のないバンドが移動するときは車だったんでしょうね。この曲が作られたころはインターネットなんてないですから、あの広いアメリカを何時間もかけて移動するのはさぞつらかったでしょう。考えただけでゾッとします。
食事のためにレストランに入れば、髪の長いバンドマンたちをからかうトラック野郎たちだっていたはずです。
そんな、ステージで観る彼らとは180度違う現実に苦しみながらも、ひとたびステージに立てばスターを演じ全力を尽くす。
夜眠れないでいると移動中に出会った女性（娼婦？）の言葉を思い出す…その女性がなんて言っていたのかはわかりませんが、生きるために今の人生を受け入れている強い女性だったのではないでしょうか。
そしてまた旅に出てステージに立つ…
そういう歌だと思ってます。
